I have used Audacity with XP and didn't have any problems. I have a new computer that has Vista and have just downloaded Audacity. Unlike with XP, now there is a humm or buzz in the background when recording. I'm using the same mic (I record articles, not music). When I try ''noise reduction' it distorts the voice. Any suggestions? Will the Beta version do any better or am I just out of luck with Audacity?

The computer changed, so the sound device and its setup did as well if you are plugging into the computer mic port. Try finding the reason for the noise - does using a mic with a longer cord help, so the mic is further from the computer?

Is this new machine a laptop or note/netbook? The sound device may be picking up noise because it's just too close to the working parts of the computer. Go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the Windows Control Panel, choose the sound device in the "Sound recording" panel, click "Volume" and choose the mic. Are there any choices there for "noise cancellation" or similar behind an "Advanced" button? Often these make the sound worse or cause volume dropouts but you could try.
