ok when i record something the beat plays in the background and i like that but when i play it back it sonds really scrachy like umm idk but it sounds higher and more uglyer i think it might be because of my speakers or might be cause of the mic

Record and play back from the same device in the Audacity Audio I/O Preferences (Edit > Preferences). Set the Audacity project rate bottom left to 44100 Hz (or if you are on Windows Vista or 7, install Audacity Beta 1.3.12 instead, then set the project rate to match the Windows "default format" for your device). See this link for help (applies the same to Windows Vista too).

Always make sure your sound device has the latest drivers specific to your particular computer model and operating system, as supplied by the device or motherboard manufacturer. See:

corpitos2013, you e-mailed our feedback address and said there that the problem was that the "beat was being recorded twice". I still suggest you read and act upon all the information above.

If the (main) problem is that the recording includes what you are listening to, then the mistake you are making is either:

• You are recording from stereo mix or a comparable input which records computer playback instead of from the mic or line input
• You are correctly recording from mic or line but you are listening to speakers so that the mic is picking up the speakers - use headphones instead

If you correct the above then you can still hear the recording and/or the playback track while you are recording, but the recording will only be what you were trying to record.

If you need to choose the mic or line input, do so in the Audacity Mixer Toolbar if you are on Windows 2000 or XP, or at Edit > Preferences: Devices if you are on Vista or 7 and using Audacity 1.3.12.

my Mixer Toolbar the thing that says mic or stereo the little drop down thing on that is blank is that cuase there is no mic?? and you said something about headphones can i use any kind like regular ones??

Please tell us what version of Windows you are on (XP, Vista, 7)? If you are on XP, the Mixer Toolbar input selector will give you choices for the sound device listed in the Audacity Audio I/O Preferences. Choose your inbuilt sound device in Preferences for both playback device and recording device. Then assuming you have the mic plugged into the red mic port of the computer, choose mic in Mixer Toolbar.

If you are on Vista or 7 you have to choose the mic for the inbuilt sound device in the Audacity Preferences, not the Mixer Toolbar. For Vista or 7 you should use Audacity 1.3.12, which means you choose mic in the Audacity Devices Preferences.

If none of the above works out, tell us your operating system and then we'll take it step by step.

The headphones that will give you less delay and more flexibilty in use will be ones that connect to audio out (green) of the computer (not USB headphones). You can also get a "headset" that is a microphone as well as a pair of headphones. Those have a dual red and green connector. Red goes in the mic port of the computer, green in audio out. If you are only using a very cheap mic that may give you a better mic into the bargain.
