Whenever I record something it works fine when I am silent but then whenever I say something it sounds wierd and I can barely hear what I tried to record.

Give us a push. What are you trying to record? On-Line radio show? Your live guitar performance?

You need to be a little chattier than that.

"I'm trying to record my electric guitar by plugging the amplifier's headphone jack into the Mic-In of my Lenovo ThinkPad T410 laptop. I'm using Windows 7 and Audacity 1.2.6. I'm listening to the computer speakers during my performance."

Any of that correct? That's the kind of detail I need.

If you're plugged into the Mic-In of your laptop, you can't do that. The two connections, even though they have the same plug, aren't compatible with each other. You can do this with a Windows Laptop, but you probably need a USB sound card like the UCA 202 we reviewed here.

Scroll down.

Some computer have the ability to switch one connection between mono microphone and stereo line. consult your instruction.

Once you do get your music into your computer, you have to defeat all the Windows sound management. Dig in the Windows control panels and turn off all advanced, automatic, and conferencing settings.

Then, you get to use headphones. Computers have delay and odd feedback problems normal amplifiers and sound systems don't have. Much better to record live performances with headphones.
