How do I select long parts without...

...having to hold the left-click down & scrolling forever to the right or left to find where I want it to end?
Is there a way for me to just type in a start & end time for where I need to highlight the audio?

you can set timer points in 1.3 but not in 1.2
In 1.2 it will help you if you zoom out (use the magnifying glass icon)

You should take this as the opportunity to install Audacity 1.3.12. You can safely install both on your machine, just only use one at a time.

That's just one of the nicer tools in 1.3 missing from 1.2. That and Audacity 1.2 is pretty old and doesn't always get along so well with modern machines.

I use the brute force method of deleting large chunks of show. Select a large chunk clearly not enough and delete that. Zoom in a bit and do it again. Repeat until you only have the desired show left. I admit this requires you to know ahead of time the constitution of the show.
You can also use the labels to help you delete large chunks of show. Zoom way into the show and find the IN point. Set a label Control-B. Now label the OUT point. Zoom way out so you can see both points. Select near the In point and it becomes magnetic and pulls your cursor home. drag sideways and the other label becomes magnetic.
Delete.
