Look near the Time/Date on your Desktop for a loudspeaker icon. Double click on it to open your sound card mixer applet.
Find the "Recording" settings in the sound card mixer and check that your required recording input is enabled.

I'm assuming that you are trying to record from your computers internal sound card - if not, then please clarify.

I have a similar problem.

I'm on Vista. I've just installed Audacity. At the weekend initially it wouldn't recognise my mic, but then I plugged the mic into the back sockets instead of the front sockets of my computer and was able to record my voice ok. So today I opened Audacity for a new session and started recording. Within a few seconds I got a message saying that Audacity had stopped working and it threw me out. I went straight back in, but found that I was now unable to record anymore as Audacity is not recognising my mic.

On the Control Panel the mic is recognised as a recording device and has a green tick, though nothing else does.

In the Preferences screen the only devices shown are Sound Mapper, Speakers, and SPDIF Interface.

The Volume Mixer settings on my computer all look to be perfectly normal.

Suggestions, please !

Try upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12 - it is the recommended version for Vista and Win 7.

Problem solved - by setting both the Playback device and the Recording device to Sound Mapper. Easy if you know how.
