Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I think that device is solid state (no tubes). http://www.artproaudio.com/products.asp ... t=9&id=150
The maximum gain is somewhat lower than the tube version. http://www.artproaudio.com/products.asp ... t=9&id=124

That one I have used.
Sound quality is pretty good. The box is plastic. Sometimes it does not initialise correctly after the computer is rebooted, but to fix that you just need to use "Safely remove hardware" and remove 2 drivers, then switch it off for a few seconds, then switch it back on again and wait a few moments for the two drivers to re-initialise. It works OK with Audacity on Windows XP.

Speaking personally, I'm quite tempted to get a USB ART tube pre-amp, but I'm not tempted by the M-Audio Mobile Pre USB which seems a bit overpriced unless you particularly want the bundled software. (I use Linux, so the bundled software not relevant for me).

Here we go. I found somebody who could drive a guitar.

http://kozco.com/tech/MicTests/timc.wav

It's a very abbreviated clip because I adjusted the mixer wrong and it started clipping. !S#$%^&

That's not the $20 microphone.

This one is a vocal mic and has a slight vocal haystack, but nothing that can't be dealt with. This is the raw capture. No filters, no effects other than the cutting, no rumble thingies, no nothing. Straight through the Peavey and into the A to D in the Mac. I told the performer to be absolutely still after the last note. That's the background noise.

I think I'm going to like this room. I was talking to one of the other engineers and they told me how to lower the motorized blinds and make the room even quieter.

I don't have my headphones here, but it sounds very low noise on the speakers. What mic did you use?

It's a Peavey PV6 plugged into my MacBook Pro. Any minute I'm going to have extra time to upload the pictures. The room, for all practical purposes is dead quiet with no echoes. The microphone is one of these...

So this is what you can do if the microphone and room are not restrictions. This isn't even my Peavey. I borrowed it from one of the training rooms. Audacity 1.3.12 set for 44100, 32-bit floating, Stereo.

It sounds remarkably like what you were doing.

The performer wants to do more and wants me to warn him so he can bring in a much better guitar. I can't imagine what he can do with a better instrument -- but I'm going to find out.

Nice choice. I look forward to hearing the "much better" guitar.

I'm still trying to find out some time and patience to hang some blankets or similar on the walls of the (almost) empty bedroom... but this weather doesn't let me stay away from the beach and outdoors activities... 8-)

The room helps a great deal. It does sound a little strange when you walk in -- like a funeral home. I don't wonder that most people avoid it for meetings. It's always empty.

Yes!!

<<<this weather doesn't let me stay away from the beach and outdoors activities>>>

Tragic problem, isn't it? "No, no! Don't make me go running on the beach in the sunset after work!"

Pure torture. Really.
