Trying to record from browser initiated player

I have an HP proBook and W7 Pro.

In the Audacity perferences - devices I have: Host=MME or Windows direct sound; Recording device= SoundMax (Integrated digital HD audio) or Primary sound capture driver.

In the control Panel Sound I have only a microphone as a recording device.

When I record as in the title I get recording picked up from the Laptop speakers via the microphone which is not satifactory.

How do I pick up the sound internally (I have looked at the advice on http://audacityteam.org/help/faq?s=reco ... =streaming but to no avail)?

There's another one of those...

The good news is, some computers don't. More and more modern Windows machines are dropping out of the factory with no convenient way to record computer sound. For a while there, the tools were just hidden, now they're gone.

You can go the messy analog route with a USB sound card like the UCA202 and cross connecting wires, or a money-based product like Total Recorder.

how do you initiate audacity from a browser ?

do you mean you want to record stuff from the internet ?

you dont want the speakers playing while you record ?
or what ??

guessing at what your real question was
i dont think that soundmax can do what you want
realtek usually can
an external interface could

Yes, if I open up a music source site in a browser and stream the music to play on the machine, I want to be able to have Audacity open and record the music as it is played. I will investigate the other options you suggest and if you have a better idea doing it this way then I would be grateful to know it. Many thanks.

i dont know how to get audacity to open automatically
but if you can play the sound
and **IF** your card supports it
you could manually open audacity and record

i do NOT think soundmax supports it
but maybe you have a newer one

really suspect that your only choice is an external interface
and manually starting audacity

Or money-based software.

Also worth mentioning that Audacity 1.2.6 is known to have multiple problems on Windows 7. For Vista and Windows 7 you should use Audacity 1.3.12.

Did you followed the link to this page: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... trol_Panel and try the step to "Show disabled devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices"?
