squeaky noises

Post by leddybug » Sun Jul 18, 2010 10:02 pm

I have an mp3 of the audio from a movie. It is over an hour long, but plays fine on windows media player. But when I try to import it into Audacity, I get about 15 seconds of pure squeaking noises. Any suggestions? (I'm trying to add some silence to the beginning of the mp3 so that it matches the video file I have better; otherwise the voices won't match with the scenes). By the way, I have windows 7 and Audacity version 1.2.6.

That's exactly what happens if you try to import an unsupported file type, so my guess is that your "MP3" is not a real MP3 format file, but some other unsupported format.
Try downloading 1.3.12 from download page. Then install FFmpeg

Okay, I installed 1.3.12 and ffmpeg, but I still get squeaking noises, so I'm guessing it's an issue with the file. I used mkvextract to extract the audio from an mkv video, and got a file called "track2file.aac". I tried changing the file extension to mp3, which seemed to work using windows media player, but gives the squeaking noises in Audacity. Do you know how I can get the track2file into a legitimate, working mp3, so that I can edit it?

Thank you for your help.

Changing the name does not change the format. It may work with Windows Media Player, but WMP is weird :)

Try changing the file extension back to .aac and see if Audacity can import it.
