recording from a portable tapedeck

I just purchased a new computer and I can't get it to record from a tape. I'll tell you first of all that all I did with my last computer was take the speaker jack from my computer and plug it into the taperecorder and then record to my computer. Now I plugged the speaker jack into the headphones on the tape recorder (like before) and now it won't record. I get the sound through my computer but it says check the inline or something on the back of the computer. Anyway I need help. Is there anyway someone would be willing to call me and talk me through this problem? If so please email me at hapndoyle<at>gmail<dot>com and we can talk and I can give you my phone number through there. Thanks a lot

So is this new computer a laptop by any chance. If so does it actually have a line-in? Many laptops only have a mic-in these days. If so you could be acandidate for one of the external soundcards that we have reviewed in this sticky thread: http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9477

Also please tell us which version of Windows you are using.

I plugged the speaker jack -- thats an OUTput

into the head phones -- thats another OUTput

on the tape recorder (like before[???]) and now it won't record.
-------------
you took the OUTput from the computer via speaker jack
and put it INto the OUTput of the tape machine

no wonder nothing records
you need to take one OUTput and send it INto an INput jack

are you sure you didnt take the computer speaker out into the tape recorder input
or
take the phones out from the tape into the line in of the computer
back when it was working ???
