Can this file be saved?
I just completed a recording and saved the file. I then renamed it in Windows Explorer. Then when I tried to open it instead of the recording the window displays a folder named e00. When I open that folder another folder displays named d00. When I open that folder 154 files display with names like e00000b0, e00000c7, e00000d0, etc. When I click on any of these a 5-second snippet of my recording displays. These appear to be in random order and it will take me forever to paste them together! Is there any way to retrieve this recording without having to paste all of these together or do it over? Thank you!

Did you do File > Save Project or File > Export?dorlene wrote:I just completed a recording and saved the file. I then renamed it in Windows Explorer. If you did File > Save Project, you can only open that in Audacity. If you renamed the .aup project file or the _data folder, you should rename it/them back to the original name, and make sure the .aup and _data folder are inside the same folder. Otherwise, you won't be able to open the project properly. Then open the .aup file to open the project in Audacity, and do FIle > Export to give yourself a WAV or MP3 file you can play in other programs. This is explained in this Frequently Asked Question and this one.
If you only did File > Export, then the 154 files don't concern you because they are temporary data. Audacity will delete them when you close it. The file you are looking for is the file you exported. To find out where it is, click File > Export again and it will open to that folder.

Re: Can this file be saved?
Thank you for your quick and helpful reply, Gale. I didn't realize that there was both a data folder and an aup file. I had renamed the folder but didn't rename the file. I tried to undo my mistake by renaming these but the data is lost. Fortunately it was a small file and will be easy for me redo. Next time I will just save the project with a new name. Thank you again for a terrific product and your expert assistance.

Re: Can this file be saved?
If you want to rename projects we strongly recommend doing this in Audacity with File > Save Project As, which will make sure the new project has a correctly named .aup file and _data folder. For more information please read File Management Tips.dorlene wrote: Next time I will just save the project with a new name.
