Imported MP3s distorted

I recently downloaded Audacity, and I'm having a problem (duh). I tried to import an MP3 file from my iTunes library, through the Project>Import Audio option. When I played the file in Audacity, there was only distorted noise, with no audio from the song itself recognizable. I checked the wiki and found that the file was being clipped, but I have no idea why this is happening. I'd like to cause the file to playback properly, but I'm not sure how to do this. The Track and project sample rates are both set at 48000Hz, my sound card is SigmaTel High Definiton Audio, and I am using Audacity version 1.2.6.

Left to its own devices, iTunes saves music in AAC, not MP3. You can configure Audcaity 1.3.12 to recognize this format, but not Audacity 1.2.

Audacity 1.3 Projects will not open in 1.2. You can safely put both versions of Audacity on your machine, but only use one at a time.

You might be able to get iTunes to convert for you. Open iTunes preferences and change CD Import Format from AAC (or iTunes or iTunes Plus) to MP3. OK.

Click on one of the songs and Advanced > Make MP3 version. This may fail if you bought the music from the iTunes Store.
