I have been using Audacity satisfactorily with XP2. On my new computer, with Windows 7 (64 bit) and Audacity 1.3.12, it works, but I have to reduce the Mic input right down to 0.07 to avooid clipping. Have I missed something?

Go to the system mixer, click the Recording tab, select the mic, then right-click over it and hit Properties. Look for any "Boost" or "AGC" control and turn it off. On Windows 7, this control is often on the "Custom" tab after you hit Properties.
