Noise Removal

Post by tdat7192 » Tue Jul 06, 2010 2:29 am

Just joined this board and it seems like the right thing to do. I have been using audacity for year or so and have digitized about 400 lps. The recording and splitting are great. Click Removal great. Noise removal, not so great.

I just received some files from my brother and they want a hum removed from some spoken sections. The hum is a nice and consistent sound. I select a "quiet" section and use that to set the profile and then when I select all and return to Noise Removal, the Preview is GREAT! (Having set the slider about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way from Less, closer to Less) So I click Remove Noise and it is very bad. The voice is all broken up with odd affects.

Is there something I am doing incorrectly or something I should change from procedurally?
Thanks for any input or suggestions. If I could only run the preview on the file and save, I would be set.

I am using audacity 1.2.6 on an XP machine.

Best, Terry

You could be in luck. Over that past few weeks there has been some work done on the Noise Removal effect in Audacity 1.3. It hasn't been officially released yet, but I am testing it at the moment and it is looking very good. The down side is that it is not yet fully documented, but most of the features are covered in the Audacity 1.3 manual. http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... se_Removal

If you want to try it, you can download the "Nightly" version of Audacity from here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php? ... s_Binaries

The Nightly version does not need to be "installed", just download the ZIP file and extract it onto your computer, then create a desktop link to the "audacity.exe" file.
You do not need to uninstall your old version of Audacity, but be aware that Audacity 1.2.6 cannot open projects that have been saved in Audacity 1.3.

If you are not feeling so adventurous, it is likely to be released fairly soon, though I'm not aware of a set release date as yet. You can register at the bottom of this page if you wish to be notified of the next release http://audacityteam.org/

If you decide to try the Nightly version your feedback regarding the Noise Removal effect would be most welcome.
