Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

I think we may need to go back a few steps to unravel this.

Which version of Audacity are you using? (Look in the Audacity "Help menu > About Audacity")
Which version of Windows are you using?
Is the audio something that you have recorded in Audacity, or is it an audio file that you just want to edit/process?
Should we be looking at the question of why is the audio all treble?
Do the other buttons work? (Play/Pause/Record/Skip to start/Skip to end)

Hi. Thanks for coming back to me. The Audacity is 1.2.6 I'm using Windows XP
and yes the other buttons respond during a recording and after.Except the Effects button.
The records I have recorded have no body in the sound,no bass, they have a high treble
sound. I am using a "Soundlab" record player. I did momentarily access the effects tab,I
don't know how I did it,clicked on bass boost and was presented with a choice of "wave
frequencies"which meant nothing to me.
I am transferring my record collection to Itunes, well trying to.
Thanks again
regards
David

With high treble and no baas - it sounds likely that you are not using a phono preamp (which you need otherwise the necessary RIAA equalization will not be done).

Does your Soundlab TT have a built in pre-amp? Or do you have an external pre-amp/amp?

i may be wrong
and koz or fiddle will surely let me know
in the way i interpret the original question
but
effects do NOT work DURING recording
you apply the f/x AFTERwards
so effects will be grayed out during recording
but will be there when you stop

you can apply riaa eq to a TT recording
after you record to adjust the high/low to sound right

That is correct, and may well be part of the problem, but I had alarm bells ringing about the recordings being "all treble". On this latter point I suspect that waxcylinder has described the underlying problem. It would be good if we could take this topic step-by-step and hopefully arrive at a complete solution, so let's wait for now 'till we find out what equipment David is using and how it is all connected, then we can take it from there.
