The Audacity of Spitfish!

My voice, recorded with Audacity, has sharp sss sounds which I would like to de-ess.

I installed spitfish in the plugins, and installed the bridge recommended in an Audacity FAQ.

For a non-techie, recording newbie, I have come a long way on one day.

But I don't know where to go from here. The effects drop down menu in Audacity shows Spitfish, but all menu items are greyed (inactive.)

Is it possible to run a file already recorded, through the Spitfish de-esser to remove the ssss sounds? (Or do I have to record again)

Can anyone tell me how to use the spitfish plugin, in steps?

Thank you.

Gary

The important question here is "why does it have sharp sss sounds"?

It is much better to start with a good recording than to try and correct a bad one. Trying to correct a poor recording will often take a lot of time and still give disappointing results.

VST support in Audacity is very basic (because of licensing issues), so not that many people use it. You may be able to reduce the harshness of your recording by just reducing some of the treble with the Equalization effect.

Have you selected the track that you want to apply the effect to? The effects menu stays greyed out until a selection is made.
