2-part problem recording vocal track over existing music

Post by anotherwhiner » Tue Jun 29, 2010 2:23 pm

Audacity 1.2.6, OS Windows XP. Working from WAV file. Have successfully removed original vocals from the song. Now with headset/mic on (I'm using just a standard headset with microphone setup), trying to sing to the music while recording a new vocal track. Two things: 1. The only way I can get a headset mix (where I can hear my vocals in the headset with the music as I sing) is if I have both "Play other tracks while recording new one" and "Software Playthrough" checked. However I then get the echo I was warned about. 2. Also, no matter what I seem to do, there is a delay between what I'm hearing in the phones and the vocals. Any direction would be appreciated.

We will direct you to Audacity 1.3.12 from here...

...which has the ability to "tune out" some, but not all, of the delays. Some computers can't be made into Digital Audacity Workstations, but you do have the right idea. I'm told you don't need Software Playthrough selected, that you can do the same thing in the Windows Control Panels without the echo.

How did you get rid of the original vocals? Most people fail on that step. It's not that easy and most songs don't work right.

To remove the vocals I simply followed the instructions at:

http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Vocal_Removal

It ain't perfect in that the vocals are still in the mix to some degree but very faint. It's livable for what we are trying to accomplish. It worked with the WAV file of the tune but not the MP3. I have a musician friend rehearsing for a show next year and we are trying to take his old recordings which I lifted from vinyl and remove the vocals. He then wants to sing into his headset/microphone along with the tune while recording his vocal track and also be able to hear himself in the headset without all the echo he's getting and the delay (as if in a recording studio.) I'm not convinced the headset with attached mic is the best way to go but anyway.....

I installed the beta version of Audacity the other day but have not used it yet as I have all this stuff in the earlier version. So you're suggesting I start over in the Beta?

Thanks Koz....I will check out the link you posted and report back.
