I have been using audacity to record focus group discussions. While testing a new microphone I tried the "Monitor Input" Command and now my IBM Thinkpad laptop won't stop playing everything that is recorded by the built in microphone, which is immediately creating feedback through the built in speaker! I can hit mute to silence the problem, but nothing else will stop the feedback, even shutting down audacity and restarting the computer. Now I get feedback constantly.
any suggestions?

Preferences > Audio I/O > Playthrough
Turn both off.
