Sorry if this is covered in other posts or FAQs . . . I couldn't find any help there. Trying to record a track on vinyl I find the volume extrmely low and need to turn the control more than three-quarters up to hear, Should I try to rectify this in the soundcard settings in Control Panel (XP), or under Preferences in Audacity?

(Source device is an Ion iTTUSB05 USB turntable, and I'm running Audacity 1.2.6).

Anyone kind enough to reply should consider me the dummiest of dummies.

The turntable may have a gain control underneath the chassis. You may be able to modify the input level in the Audacity Mixer Toolbar. If it doesn't have any effect, the slider in the recording section of Sounds and Audio Devices should do so.

On my system the Audacity Mixer Toolbar does control the Sounds and Audio Devices slider. I tend to set the gain on the turntable fairly low so that I need to set the Mixer Toolbar input slider quite high to record to a maximum of -3 dB on the Meter Toolbar. I find that gives me the most "open" sound for the classical or occasional "soft rock" I record, but that might produce a little more background noise than sending a high level from the turntable and recording it at a low level. Any USB noise is easily removed with the Audacity Noise Removal.
