Problem with Guitar FX and Audacity

Post by Nonborn » Fri Feb 29, 2008 7:15 am

If this isn't even possible I'm sorry. Just kinda thought it would be...

I'm trying to record some guitar tracks, while using an effects processor called Guitar FX.

I have my guitar hooked straight into my microphone port of my laptop and it works fine, I've tried using Sound Recorder that was on Windows by default and it records correctly, but as soon as I try it with Audacity it just records the guitar minus the effects being performed by Guitar FX. For example I add a wah with Equalizer/Filters with Guitar FX but Audacity only records the guitar without the wah and so forth. Am I doing something wrong? Or was there a setting I didn't see?

From what I can gather Guitar FX is a standalone application, so my guess is that it's processing the incoming audio but the resulting effected signal is not passed to Audacity - it only "hears" the incoming signal from the selected input, not from the output of Guitar FX. You may be able to pick up the effected signal using "Stereo Mix" (or similar, it depends on your sound card). This input is effectively what you hear through your PC's speakers, so it may pick up the Guitar FX output - it's worth a try.

An alternative approach would be to use hardware effects before the PC, or move to an audio app that supports real time DX or VST effects (there's a ton of free effects out there). Audacity supports VST after a fashion, but not in real time - you have to record the track then apply the effect.

I was out of it when I wrote that. It was like 2 am here. But after waking up this morning I figured out a way, it's a little tricky:

1. Use GuitarFX on my laptop, guitar plugged into mic port

2. Use a 1/8" - 1/8" double male cord from headphone port to mic port on other laptop

3. Use Audacity on other laptop, and possibly hook a guitar amp from the headphone port on to hear what I'm playing in live time more clearly.

I guess I'm going to have to go back to radioshack for some more wires : /

I might just try your method instead, I guess I'll see what happens. Thanks anyways.
