Stop & then continue recording?

Even after reading various wiki pages, I'm still fuzzy on some basics. I stopped recording (from a tape deck) rather than pausing so I could tweak and save the file, then tried to start up again in the same file. It's now recording in what appears to be a separate pair of tracks, below the pair from the preceding recording. What will happen if I try to export the whole thing as an MP3 file? Do I need to move the newer recording into the same track area as the original? If so, how do I do that?

yes you need to combine them properly
cut and paste one to end of the other one
or time slide 2nd to end of first and then select all to combine
else
if you just select then export both they will be mixed together

read the docs and wiki again - its not that complicated - but it should be (at least cut and paste) obvious without reading it

better to record everything then tweak
easier faster too

Thanks for your patience with me. Another embarrassing question. After selecting all the material in the second pair of tracks to move it up, the cut, copy, paste, and trim options in the editing menu are all grayed out. This happened to me earlier when I was just trying to delete a small section. What has to be done to activate these editing functions?

Just Pause in Audacity at the end of side-1, set up side-2 to rexcord and then press the Pause button again - Audacity will continue recording.

In Audacity 1.3 you can Stop the recording after side-1 and later use the Record Append (new function in 1.3) to record after the end of side-1 on the same track.

I believe Audacity will try to mix the two tracks into one show -- play them both at once. Not what you want.

You can use Record Pause to stop recording long enough to change the tape and then pick up right where you left off. Be sure to press Stop at the end.

More impressive is Audacity 1.3.12 which allows Append Recording where you can record one song after the other days later if you want.

You can install both versions, but only use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 projects will not open in 1.2.

Can't you select the second track, Control-C copy, select the end of the top track and Control-V paste?

that is what he should do
but he stopped edited and now has two stereo tracks to combine

In which case he can slide the second track along the timeline with the time-shift tool so it starts just after the end of the first track.
