Hi all. I am hoping someone has the knowledge I need to correct my problem.
I have been using audiacity for ages, and recently have moved house. When i set up my PC again (same one) and my turntable (same one) all seemed well. I opened a spound file and played it back perfectly, however my problem started when I pressed the record button on the software. All I get is a horrible fluctuating noise comign through the speakers. it changes pitch and volume but is constant. there is no sound coming from the stylus and it doesn't matter whether the usb is connected or not, I still get this noise. I have not touched any of the settings since the move, so everything should be that same as it was 3 days ago before I moved house. Any clues would be brilliant, cheers Garry

Re: Horrible noise coming from my speakers
Your description sounds like you are getting feedback.
If you're using Audacity 1.2.6, check in "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O" and check that "Software Playthrough" is NOT selected.
If you are using a USB turntable, also check (in the same tab), that the recording device is set to USB.
If the problem persists, you will need to give more information about your system - what equipment you are using, how it's connected up, what sort of sound card, which version of Windows etc. We like details and model numbers and anything else that paints a clear picture of the set-up
If you are unsure of your Audacity version, look in the Help menu > About Audacity

Re: Horrible noise coming from my speakers
Hi, thanks for the tips, unfortunately they haven't worked. I have unplugged my laptop from everything, moved it to another location and re run the software with the same results. so its nothing to do with the usb connection, or anything else that is connected to the PC. it will actually record this horrible noise as well and play it back. as soon as I hit record the two meters on the top over the mic icon start to pulsate and are cleary registering this input, hence the playback of the sound. I am usuing the latest beta software, which I have been using since april without any problem at all. my software is windows 7, again in use since Feb or so. There should be no reason for this to happen as I have just moved house, and every thing is the same as it was before, so it has me perplexed. Garry

What sort of noise is it? A sort of squealing howl? A "static" noise like a mis-tuned radio? or something else?
