I am new to this and its driving me NUTS. Seem like every time I start Audacity, I get a different result. I seem to be recording OK but I get no sound on playback. Have before; can't now. All I'm trying to do is download casette tapes so I can burn a CD. Nothing complicated.

Read the relevant tutorials:
USB cassette deck
Conventional tape deck connected to computer line-in
CD burning

If you want to listen *while* you are recording, click Edit > Preferences: Audio I/O and enable "software playthrough". The "Playback Device" in Audio I/O Preferences needs to be your inbuilt sound device if your speakers/headphones are connected to the green "audio out" of your computer.
