He peeps,

I'm recording a mixtape and I use different tracks for each song.
I've recorded already a little part of the mix and the overlaps are good now.

But now I want to add a new track/song in front of the existing mix.
Therefore I have to move the whole mix (includes the different recorded tracks) to the right,
so that I've some space left to add a new track/song.
After recording this new track/ song, I want to move/drag the whole mix again, to connect it with the new track/ song.

My problem is that I don't know how to move/drag the whole mix, without moving the tracks individually.
Can somebody help me with this please ?

Upgrade Audacity to version 1.3.12
then it's just:
Ctrl+A (select All)
F5 key (Time Shift tool, or click on the button with the double headed arrow)
Click on any of the tracks and drag.

(F1 key to go back to the normal selection tool)

Audacity 1.3.12 has many other improvements over the old 1.2.6 version and I would highly recommend it

I'm not sure if you wanted to move all but the latest recorded track to right? If so, after having selected all the tracks in 1.3.12, use up or down arrow to move the yellow "focus" border to the latest track, and hit ENTER to deselect it. Then dragging any of the selected tracks will move all of the selected tracks.

There is a kind of workaround in 1.2.6 that you can SHIFT-click to select the multiple tracks you want to move, and Generate > Silence from the cursor position in all the selected tracks. That will move them all right by the same amount. Or you can click in any track at the place on the timeline you want to record from, then the new track will record from there. Not that I'm encouraging you to stay with 1.2.6...

I was assuming that the new track had not yet been recorded, but yes, tracks can be selected/deselected at will using the up/down arrows and Enter key, or Shift+click on the track info box (taking care not to accidentally move the track volume or pan sliders).

In fact, reading the question again, the tracks do not need to be moved twice. The existing tracks could just be muted either with the mute buttons or Ctrl+U for mute all tracks (Ctrl+SHIFT+U to unmute all, or use the mute buttons, or select from the tracks menu). The new track could be recorded and then the other tracks selected and moved as Gale has described.

There's many options and ways of working but my preferred work-flow is usually to just have one song per Audacity project (it helps keep projects from becoming too big unwieldy) and then combine the tracks in one project after they have been mixed down and exported.

I guess that is a viable workaround, but it's going to be a pain if any of the tracks need to be individually moved to the left.

Another option with Audacity 1.2.6 is:
Ctrl+A (select all)
HOME button (move cursor to beginning)
Generate > Silence

but the result is still the same clumsy padding with space. Audacity 1.3.12 is in my opinion definitely the way to go.

How can you do what - move more than one track at once? Read the messages from the start of this thread. It is easiest to move more than one track at once in Audacity Beta.
