How to edit out the middle of a song?

Post by jillannemc » Sat Jun 05, 2010 8:25 pm

Hi,
I'm a kindergarten teacher and have found a song I want my students to perform, but it's way too long. I want to use the beginning and the end of the song, but not the middle. How do I edit that out?
Thanks!
Jill :)

There's a simple sounding question.

I think the official party line has you zooming into each edit point (drag-select and Control-E) and setting a label at the expected point. Control-B, I think. Control-F zooms out full. Control-3 zooms out a little bit.

Then it's a matter of drag selecting the area between the two labels which become magnetic and sticky to help you out. Delete.

That's not how I do it. I use the slash and burn method because for me, it's faster. Starting with the whole song on the timeline, I delete the whole middle of the song only making sure I'm not deleting too much.

Then zoom into what's left and do it again. And again. Sooner or later, I'm down to one or two notes on either side of a really good, controlled edit. From here, I can do and undo selections and deletions until I get what I want.

The most crazy-elegant way to do it is put the same song on two timelines one above the other. Edit > Import the second one.

Then you can use the Envelope Tool to fade each song in and out as needed and and the Time Shift Tool to push the second song around so the two line up.

I would so be doing this in Audacity 1.3.12.

My personal preference is to force Audacity not to update the screen while I'm editing.

Edit > Preferences > Tracks > Deselect "Update tracks while playing."
