USB over modulating can't find a control

Post by ericmark » Fri Jun 04, 2010 4:20 pm

If I use the USB on the turn table the meters show over modulating and the resulted recording confirms it was.
Using windows 60 second recorder it records OK so I would assume not anything to do with turn table or USB connection or general windows settings. However I have tried to alter in windows and under USB the input control is greyed out.

The input level slider on Audacity is also de-activated and no matter where placed there seems no change in input levels. Although when using sound card it works A1.

The idea was to use Phono output for stereo system and USB for computer but as it is I can only use the Phono output and have to record all through the sound card.

There is no control on turntable and because the Windows 60 second recorder works OK I would think it is nothing to do with the deck.

Any ideas as to how to turn down the gain please.

Whther you can do control in Audacity depends entirely on your sound card in the USB device and its drivers - and it sounds like yours won't do that.

Have you ensured that you have got the latest up-to-date driver for your USB device?

The only other way normally is to use the hardware gain control (if provided) on the USB device - but you say that yours has no such gain control.

You may be able to control the signal level through your windows contol panel for audio services - or your USB sound cards driver may supply a software gain control.

Otherwise, I hope you kept the receipt ...

We could possibly help more if you gave us more details - makes and model nos. are good.

The turn table is a Prolectrix sold by Asda I will guess I need a better USB driver where I am permitted to adjust the input?

No - I think you need a better USB turntable - or better still a proper turntable which you connect though a phono pre-amp and then in to the line-in on your PC - or connect via an external USB soundcard if you have no line-in on your PC or if you have a poor on-board soundcard in your PC.

As I said before "I hope you kept the receipt" - so take it back to Asda and exercise your rights under the Sale of Goods Act and ask for a refund as it clearly is not "fit for purpose" as the legal jargon has it.
