I am using windows Vista home premium. I downloaded both the stable and unstable version of the programme but it wouldnt give me any line in option on the interface.
Pls help.

You missed an important piece of this. If you're on a Laptop, you may not have a physical Line-In to switch to. Many PC laptops have only Mic-In.

is it possible to use the usb to record with audacity cause my laptop has no line in only mic in?

Many of us us external USB soundcards very successfully with Audacity. I myself use the Edirol UA-1EX. The other one that gets mentioned a lot on the forum is the Behringer UCA202. The Behringer is cheaper - the Edirol has a bit more features/functionality. Both firms are very helpful if you call them with technical queries.
