How would I turn volume up on one track?

Hello to you all, how are you all going?

My name is Christina and I live in Australia. Thank you for taking the time to read my question, I do appreciate it a lot
I have put a track into audacity. This track is too low in volume. How would I turn the volume on it up and then save it like that with the volume up?
The reason I ask is because I need to put 2 tracks together in a project. One track is at the perfect volume already, but the other track is so soft that you can hardly hear it. I need to make the soft track higher in volume, so that it will match the volume of the second track, so that I can then put them together and make it all one track.
Thanks ever so much for your time, I do appreciate it a lot

You can select the track by double clicking on it, then use the Amplify effect from the Effect menu.
The default setting in the Amplify effect will bring the volume up as high as possible without distorting (clipping the peaks) of the sound.
As a good introduction to Audacity, have a look at the tutorials (see links at top of page), but of course if you get stuck you are welcome to ask here on the forum.
I would highly recommend upgrading to Audacity 1.3.12 as it is much improved over the (very) old 1.2.6 version.

You can apply negative amplification with the amplify effect - experimentation is what you need to do.

Hello, and thanks heaps for your help
When I click on effects and then amplify, that whole list is greyed out so I cant use it for some reason. The only thing that works to turn the volume up is when I slide those 2 little slidey things on the left on the track while I am playing the track, that turns the volume on the track up. I was just wondering if I can just do it like that, and save it. Will the track save with the correct louder volume if I just do that? Thanks heaps once again for your help, I really appreciate it too much!

You have to be in Stop mode and not just Pause mode for the effects to work.

Actually most of my toolbar is greyed out, including "preferences" which is a bummer. This is all in stop mode by the way. I would really like a bit of equalization, at least. Any ideas??

Lo and behold! I've just discovered the solution! You have to select all to activate "effects" Voila!

"Well, it may be equalization but not as we know it, Jim." I'm up to here with it, I've been having Audacious problems all day so I think I'll just give up an' go to bed. Nite, nite all.

Sorry. Before I go is there a way to fast forward/rewind in Audacity or to zoom in on a part of the track without having to listen to the whole thing each edit? Thanks for your advice.
