Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Open a project that failed to save

Post by daveybear » Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:37 pm

Hello! I need info please (and possibly some help).
Using Audacity stable in Vista Home Premium, and for the most part it all works well, except:

1. When I make the initial save of a project after recording the tracks, the App will sometimes crash. This happens maybe one in five times. When I re-open Audacity a message pops up that the unsaved files are still in temporary hold and that if I wish I can save them manually. I need to know the procedure for this.
2. How do I open a project that is not listed in the "Recent" list? When I go to File >Open, and click on the project, all 300 or so .aup files each try to open in a separate window which of course crashes Audacity.
3. Are there some known issues with Vista that is causing these crashes? I'm saving to an external USB HD.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Are you sure Audacity crashes?

Saving to an external drive, will often take a long time. The Audacity interface usually freezes when it's saving to a relatively "slow write" drive (such as an external or network drive). It has to copy all the raw audio files from its local temp location to the external drive (if it's the first time you've saved).

I've had some large projects that I've saved to a network drive (probably faster than a usb external drive) take up to 20 mins or longer.

It may look like it crashed, but leave it alone and it will eventually save the project fine.

I tried it and it appears you are correct. In addition, I answered one of my other questions myself. When attempting to open a project from the file menu, I was apparently trying to open the .au files instead of the .aup files.

Thanks for the feedback! appreciate it!

When you save a project you should always get the dialog box that shows the amount of time spent v. time remaining and a progress bar - movement of these would indicate that things are happening - no movement = worry!

I never get that when saving a project Waxy!

I get the dialog box with estimated remaining time when exporting a mix as wav or mp3, but never when saving a project the first time after recording. (I'm not sure about resaving after edits).

Comcon,

I just tested again and I definitely do get that box - BUT I am now using 1.3 all the time.

Update: I did find an old 1.2.4 recording and re-saved that and did not get the elapsed/remaining time box - so maybe it's a 1.3/1.4 additional feature?
