Windows Media Player won't play file (Vista)

Post by Just A Grunt » Sat Feb 16, 2008 8:38 pm

I have just started using the Audacity software to try and record my collection of albums to CD. The recording seems to go fine using Audacity but after I save it as a WAV file to my hard drive and then try to play it I get a message
Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.
I am using the 1.2 version of Audacity. My version of Vista is the Home Premium.
Playback in the Audacity interface is fine it is just the saved files won't play in the Media Player. I am saving as 16 bit WAV and using the Project rate of 44100.
Any help would be appreciated? What am I doing wrong?

It sounds as if Media Player thinks another program has the file "open".

See if you can make a copy of it, and play the copy.

Try another audio player like WinAmp and see if that plays the file.

I downloaded Winamp and it actually identified the problem. The Realtek audio program that came on the computer was stuck indicating that the Line In was still in use. Once I disabled it, which Winamp prompted me to do, the problem was solved.
Thanks for the tip and thanks to the developers of Winamp for giving a solution and not just the problem.
