I already have three MP3 program files on my Windows 7 OS, but when Audacity didn't accept them for an export, I downloaded the Lame for Audacity (in Program Files(86)) -- and I still got an error message when trying to export. Maybe the problem is that when Audacity asks for the location, at the bottom of the dialogue box that comes up is a File Name that already is given as lame_enc and another entry to the right is given as Only lame_enc.dll. If I make no changes to those entries, and click on Open, I get an error message that says "Could not open MP3 encoding library!" If I try to change the File Name to include the path, I get the same error message.
If I can't get help on solving this problem through Audacity, can anyone suggest a free download for another application that would enable me to convert the WAV file that I can export from Audacity into an MP3 file?
Thank you,
Claire

Re: MP3
Please use Audacity 1.3.12 Beta. Please double-check the troubleshooting instructions to make sure you remove old paths to lame-enc.dll stored in the Audacity settings.Claire wrote:I already have three MP3 program files on my Windows 7 OS, but when Audacity didn't accept them for an export, I downloaded the Lame for Audacity (in Program Files(86)) -- and I still got an error message when trying to export. If the problem can't be resolved, you could try alternative versions of lame_enc.dll:
- LAME 3.98.3
- http://lame.buanzo.com.ar/libmp3lame-win-3.98.2.zip
- lame_enc.dll (3.98.2) without manifest (this solves most problems which can't otherwise be resolved)
- LAME 3.97 (as a last resort, this always seems to work, but we do not recommend 3.97 because it produces distortions unless you use bit rates over 192 kbps).
iTunes from Apple (if you want an alternative media player/manager to Windows Media Player) or SUPER.Claire wrote:If I can't get help on solving this problem through Audacity, can anyone suggest a free download for another application that would enable me to convert the WAV file that I can export from Audacity into an MP3 file?

Re: MP3
An excellent suggestion - you can import yourt WAV files into iTunes and use iTunes to convert them to MP3 (or even Apple's comressed format AAC). And iTunes is a better jukebox than WMP IMHO.Gale Andrews wrote:iTunes from Apple (if you want an alternative media player/manager to Windows Media Player)
See this tutorial from the 1.3/2.0 manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... _to_iTunes

Re: MP3
Gale,
Thanks for all these references. As it turns out I once had Audacity 1.2 and it seems from the instructions -- if I understand them correctly -- that this entirely rules out my fixing the problem. <sigh>
I'll try that converter.

Re: MP3
I would forget 1.2, it is likely to crash on Windows 7 if you record then stop.
Use 1.3.12 Beta, set Explorer to show hidden files, open Users<user name>AppDataRoamingAudacityaudacity.cfg, remove the [MP3] and MP3LibPath= lines, save the .cfg file, and then move lame_enc.dll into the folder where you have 1.3.12 installed. At worst, the 3.97 dll will then be detected by Audacity, even if none of the others are.

Re: MP3
Gale,
I'm glad to hear there may still be hope. The fix, however, does sound a bit complicated to me, so -- while I'll try it on my own -- I will likely have to wait for the weekend when, hopefully, my son will be free to help me.
I'll get back to you then. Thanks.
