Problems with sound levels when recording

When I record, the sound of my keyboard will be at one dB level on the audacity screen, but then for some reason it gets very soft, and proceeds to fluctuate while I am playing. I have no idea why it does this, but it seems like my computer (Windows 7) is like sensitive to the loud noise levels. The input just bounces around and although I can still hear what I have played when I play it back, it's annoying and frustrating, especially when the program stops working and I have no clue how to recover the files.

Do you have your keyboard plugged into the Microphone-In of your laptop?
Many Windows laptops have auto volume setting features now to set your voice for Skype conversations. This software doesn't always get along so well with musical performances.
This is beyond the Microphone-In not being able to handle the powerful stereo show from the keyboard. So nothing about this connection is quite right.
Many people with this problem solve it with a simple USB stereo sound card like the UCA202 we reviewed.
