Out of sync

Post by matt301273 » Thu Feb 14, 2008 1:10 pm

Hi,

I don't know if anyone can help me. I am recording myself using a video camera but I want to record the audio with audacity through a microphone to get better audio quality. The problem is that when I match up the video with the audio recorded with audacity, the audio gradually goes out of sync. I have made sure that the sample and bit rates match up. Can anyone advise me as to how I can get the audio and video matched up?

Thanks

Matt

Change the sound card?

First, the Audacity capture should be 48000/16-bit for video, not 44100 (I do this all the time). But the sample rate conversion should not give you sync problems.

Much more likely, the cheap sound card inside your PC wasn't recording the sound at the rate you selected. It doesn't have to be off by much. a 1000/1001 error is enough to give you a one frame per minute error. (That's the error between US television frame rate and the US wall socket power frequency, so that one is old news.)

It causes no end of problems, but all you can do is minimize it, not make it go away. To make the error vanish, you have to provide sync signals to the audio and video systems like the big kids do. Alternately, you can shoot for 11 minutes at a time (1000 feet of film) and resync at each clapboard. The heavy crystal-controlled servos inside the camera and sound recorder easily last that long without extra cables.

On "Murphy Brown," all four cameras were synchronized with cables on the floor to keep the film in sync with the video system and the sound guys.
