Oh, one more.
If the front and rear connections for microphones are, in fact the same, then you can't use both at once--or you can, but the audio gain is reduced and the chances of distortion go way up. That's not just a Microphone Input. That's a Microphone Input and DC Power Supply to run the Microphone, all in one connector. You're sharing the sound and the power supply voltage, both of which reduce the volume.

Re: Two microphones at once?
Thank you for the feedback, kozikowski.
Your suggestion is that my life would be a lot easier if I just get a production mixer?
Not to beat a dead horse's already pummeled corpse, this would make it relatively easy for me to have two mics and throw in sound effects played from files on the fly as we record?
Something that probably isn't a surprise is that I wouldn't know where to start. Could you make a suggestion for a quality production mixer or a place to find that info? Also, with me, budget is always an issue.
edit: I've done some research and looked at several models of mixers. What features should I look for (beyond 2 mic inputs) to do what I am hoping to do?

I only looked at BestBuy because I have $100 gift card there.

I've also looked at this but have read horror stories about Tascam support.
Should I move this portion of the thread to the recording equipment section? I don't want to double-post.
Thanks for your help,
guapo
