Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Using Windows XP, Media Center Edition, with Sound Blaster X-fi. After removing and reinstalling the sound card, Audacity no longer plays. It records line-in, imports and exports, and the meter toolbar reads as though the track is playing, but no sound. The same files will play in other places (Windows Media Player, Sound Blaster Creative Console and Nero), but Audacity is silent.

I presume you are using Audacity 1.2.6?

Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O

Change the Playback device.
I can't say which option without more information so just run through them. If you still have problems, let us know what options are available and if you have any other audio devices connected to the computer such as a USB turntable or microphone.
