Soundwave but no sound

Post by ediel » Tue Feb 12, 2008 9:50 pm

I am a teacher, and my student recorded about a 6 minute track with Audacity. When we go back to review the track, at about 1:43 seconds, suddenly the sound stops. She is right in the middle of a sentence, and the sound just suddently quits, even though the soundwave looks exactly the same. Has anyone had this problem before, or have any ideas? I hate for her to have to redo almost her entire recording. Any help you can give would be great.

That sounds like a Project violation. You're not playing a WAV file export, are you? You're playing an Audacity Project.

Projects are clouds of files all managed by the AUP Project File. Some of the things in that cloud might be original capture files from a lecture or a musical performance. Did somebody "clean up" all those old sound files or try to move the project from one machine to another? Moving is very difficult to do successfully.

The blue waveforms on the screen are drawn by a completely different part of the Project. They're part of the cloud, too. If you accidentally move or delete a sound clip and Audacity doesn't "know" you did that, the blue waveform and the actual musical performance will not match.

Usually, Audacity will get upset when it can't find pieces of its show, but not always.

When you get to your final show, Always Export As WAV... That forms one single, high quality sound file that you can move to backup media or email to somebody. If quality isn't important or space is very valuable, then you can Export As MP3...

Either export freezes the show and prevents damage. Projects, as you're finding out, are brittle.
