Tracks doubling problem...

Heya everyone,

Seem to have a problem with new tracks picking up the sound of other tracks... I'll describe:

1. Let's say I'm recording from the FAW Circle synth program...

2. I record one track of audio lasting 30 seconds...

3. I generate a new audio track to add some layers around the 10 second mark...

4. The problem is that when I hit "record" and wait for the 10 second mark to come around, this new track that I've created is picking up/sort of "doubling" the previously recorded track; and I don't want that.

Additional info:

In preferences, I have the "Play other tracks while recording a new one" option selected, because I want to hear the other tracks while I'm waiting to get to a certain part in the song before I start hitting notes in my syth. (but unfortunately however, if I do this, the new track that I'm planning to use to add layers, picks up the sound from the previously composed track and doubles it. need to make that not happen! )

In preferences, I do not have Software playthrough option selected, because when i do, that causes an echo in the synth and it gets recorded... don't want that.

Anybody have any ideas? My apologies if I haven't described this problem well enough. Would be glad to re-state the problem if necessary.

I know in a general sense what's happening. You are not recording your performance. You're recording Mix-Out, Stereo-Mix, or What-U-Hear which is everything the computer happens to be doing at that instant, either direction.

This is the setting you need to use to record internet audio or YouTube, but is completely the wrong setting for live performances. It gives you echoes or double recordings.

I can't tell you specifically how to treat this problem, but the solution is proper settings in the Windows Control Panels.

I presume the FAW Circle synth program is running on the same computer as Audacity?
So you are recording the synth using "Stereo Mix". Recording "Stereo Mix" is, as Koz has said, the way to record sounds that are playing on your computer.
Here's the catch - the sounds from the FAW Circle synth program are playing on your computer, but when you set Audacity to playback other tracks, they are also playing on your computer. "Stereo Mix" records ALL sounds that are playing on your computer and there is no simple way to get round the problem.

Your best option is probably to use a Digital Audio Workstation program (such as Reaper, Cubase, Sonar ....) and use Circle Synth as a VST plug-in. You can then "record" your synth parts as MIDI sequences, and play the MIDI sequences through the synth.

You can of course still use Audacity to edit either the individual parts, or the final mix after they have been rendered as audio files.
