If a 16 bit mono audio file is loaded the displays for Audacity improperly show 32 bit as the sample size even though only one channel is shown. Exporting to mono 16 bit corrects the displays but this could cause confusion...

Not exactly. Audacity loads your music file in either system sample rate or the native sample rate of the clip whichever is higher. Audacity is full of tricks like that. It's always best to get file INFO outside of Audacity. It doesn't convert well and it lies constantly.

There is actually a Feature Request for an INFO panel because there isn't one. I don't care what you want it to be or what you're going to convert it to, what kind of file do I have here right now?

Windows makes everybody crazy because Windows Media assumes everything is a Windows Media file unless proven otherwise. Even on Windows, I would install free Apple QuickTime Player if only to get the unbiased INFO panel.
