Replacing UNequal length silences with equal length silences

Post by mlapl1 » Sun May 16, 2010 5:34 pm

Hello everyone,

is it possible for Audacity to automatically identify silences of unequal length in a recording (e.g. 200ms, 750ms, 10 secs) and replace all of them with silences of equal length (e.g. 2 secs)?

Thanks for any help. I am very new to this.

Andrew

What's the job? Are you making an audio CD?

Hi and thanks for replying.

I am making some language-learning mp3s which have been recorded by native speakers leaving gaps of unequal length between utterances. I want to change the gaps into silences of equal length.

I may then transfer the mp3s to a CD or make a CD (either digital or analog) from the mp3s

Thanks again
Andrew

You can shorten silences to the same length by using "Sound Finder" in Audacity 1.3.12. It's in the "Analyze" menu.
This will place labels on a label track that mark each sound that is separated from other sounds by silence. You can set the labels so that they include a set amount of silence before and after the sound.
You can then use "Export Multiple" to export each marked section.

See here for Export Multiple: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Split ... t_Multiple
