Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Clipping problem

Post by ngutman » Fri Feb 08, 2008 8:47 pm

Using Audacity 1.2.6 and WinXP SP2. I am recording from a record player (vinyl 33rpm) but I get much clipping. I can not reduce the volume at the turntable.
What adjustment and where do I need to make to reduce the incoming volume?
Thanks,
Nathan

<<<What adjustment and where do I need to make to reduce the incoming volume?>>>

We need to know just a bit more. WinXP running on what kind of machine? Deskside? Laptop?

What kind of turntable? Older? Bought New? Model numbers?

People are selling turntables now that are very different from the older ones that we used 10 years ago, and they work very different.

WinXP running on a desktop.
Turntable older BSR 4800 McDONALD. The turntable is connected to Panasonic stereo receiver model RE-8140 which has a place to connect the turntable and a Phono setting. The receiver also has Record Out jacks which I connected to the computer Line In jack. I can hear the sound fine on the computer's speakers and obviously can control the computer speakers' volume.
I am not sure how to reduce the volume of what Audacity records to limit the clipping.
Thank you for you help,
Nathan

Up in the menu bar toward the left there should be two sliders. The first one is playback volume (speaker) and the second is input volume (little microphone). Does changing the Input Volume change the recording enough to avoid clipping?

A note. Did you know you can click once inside Audacity's red record meters and they will tell you the recording level without you actually going into record? Natural recordings should peak -3 to -6.

If that doesn't work, you're doomed to muck around inside the Windows Audio Panels.

Thank you for being so helpful. I think that I have it licked. Have to try a few more recordings. Haven't yet figured out what is the lighter blue and the darker blue mean on the Audio Track waveform.

Excellent. Remember, I'm helping you and a couple of thousand of my closest friends on the forum. So, what worked? You have just shifted from being a newbie to a forum contributer.

You didn't get a panel that looks like this?

You get two colors of bouncing lights, too. One represents the digital peaks and I think the other is the average wave value.
