Recording but No Playback Sound

Post by Mirage11 » Sun May 16, 2010 11:20 am

Struggling as a newbie here!
I am recording off YouTube and have it set to Stereo Mix and when I hit record the level indicator is showing it is picking up the sound. Then when I try to play it back the level meters are showing the sound; the waveform is a flat blue line; and I hear no sound.

I'm at a loss because I have been successful in the past and I'm obviously doing something different / wrong / stupid!!!

Can any one assist please?

It could be that the recording level is just really low and you can't hear it.
Try this and let us know what happens:

1) Select the track (double click on it)
2) Select "Amplify" from the effects menu and apply with the default settings.
3) Play.

Since the recording volume is set so low, you would do best to increase it.
To do that, double click on the loudspeaker icon near to the Time/Date on your desktop, go to the "Recording" section, and increase the recording level. Note that when you are recording from "Stereo Mix", the playback level setting also affects the level of the recording.

What are they set to?
What other options are available?
Which version of Windows?
Do you have any USB audio devices plugged in?

What is the USB audio device?
How are you listening? Headphones? Speakers? Where are they plugged in?

<<The loaded disc will play with windows media player, but when brought into Audacity to edit I have no sound.>>
What does that mean? Audacity does not play CDs so I don't know what you mean.

If you unplug the USB device and reboot the computer, does the sound magically come back on?
