Mic working but not picking up any sound

We have been working fine with Audacity using it to pick up recordings from a Sony digital dictaphone and from a childrens play keyboard. We have not plugged these into the computer. It has been fine for my son so far. We are pretty basic in our use and understanding. We have used the mic that is attached to the computer for Skype. This has worked fine for us so far for what we need and want. Today when we tried to use it the same way as we always have it would not record anything and just made a loud static noise. We tested the mike on Skype and that is fine. Can anyone help us please.

And really you'd be far better connecting headphones-out or line-out of the dictaphone or keyboard to line-in of the computer, and setting Audacity to record the line-in input.
