Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

splitting a file into units for video

Post by tacot » Thu May 06, 2010 10:44 am

I have a single commentary which I need to split into information blocks to accompany photos in a video.
Having selected the piece and copied it I cannot paste it anywhere else (a new Audacity file?) because that part of the Edit dropdown is greyed out. Is there another way? I know I have to export in it another format, block by block. That edit dropdown seems to be greyed out most of the time.

You need to have some audio selected in order for most of the commands to operate - with nothing selected thay will be greyed out.

You may be wanting to export a set of WAV or MP3 files - you can use labels and Export Multiple - see: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... s#splitter

and: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.ph ... ate_tracks

Indeed; and thank you. When I have selected and copied I cannot paste into a new file because the Paste command is greyed out. Is there another way of making a series small clips taken from the one long one?

Once you have selected and "Copied" the clip should be in your paste buffer - and the Paste command should no longer be greyed out - and you should bne able to paste the clip int to old track - or create a new track and paste it in.

My latest ineptitude is failure to insert Silence Finder into Audacity's Plug In. I have followed both routes and Explorer shows it sitting in the Plug In but reopening Audacity still has Silence Finder greyed out in Analyzer. Glad I've voted in British election today as I can blame the new government tomorrow.

If it is there at all (even greyed out) it means that it is installed. If it is not installed then it would be completely absent from the list.

To be able to use it you must be in "STOP" mode (not playing and not paused) and you must have a track (or part of a track) selected.
