"Can't Import Project File"

I have old projects I've worked on for months on end. I reinstalled Audacity and started receiving this error message:
-----------
"Can't import project file"
The file you selected is an Audacity Project File.

Only audio files, not project files, can be imported
into an existing project. To open a project file,
select Open from the File menu.

[OK]
----------

I'm double clicking on a project file and receiving this message. I also go to "File" and then "Open", select the project file, and then receive the same message.

I really hope I didn't lose 6 months worth of recording due to this issue. I only have MP3's I burned from my previous version of Audacity and some of them I can't find (stupid flash drives). I need to recover these projects files. All of the data and the project files are there. The recovery software that is out there (and recommended) does not address this issue.

Please help! I'm at such a loss!

Have you tried opening these projects in 1.3.12?
http://audacity.googlecode.com/files/au ... 1.3.12.exe

If they open there, you will receive a warning that if you save them in 1.3.12 you won't be able to open them again in a 1.2 version. That's OK given you can't open them anyway in 1.2. If the project opens in 1.3.12, select each track in turn (if you have multiple tracks) and File > Export Selection as WAV.

More generally, if you are getting that message with File > Open, it indicates the .aup files are corrupted somehow. Have you recovered them from deletion, or modified them?

If the .aup files give the same problem in 1.3.12, then the Audacity Recovery Tools should recover the audio in the _data files straightforwardly from a 1.2 project, as long as the _data folder hasn't also been corrupted.
