White Noise.

Hiya. Long time reader first time poster.
I have a problem with recording. Whilst recording white noise appears and messes up an entire recording session. As you can all imagine this is quite frustrating. It normally takes me about 2 hours to record a 5 minute track from vinyl. I've been trying to record a track for the last hour and half now!
I am using windows XP on a laptop. the record deck is a USB ION turntable. All the cables are set up correctly. I think there maybe something wrong with the audacity settings. Either that or the dead are trying to contact me.

As a long time reader you may well have spotted this beasty cropping up a lot. This is a typical USB ION turntable problem. The only reliable solution found so far is to use the analogue outputs (the two phono plugs), plug them into a phono pre-amp and record the output of the phono pre-amp through the line input of your soundcard.

Since your laptop probably does not have a line input, you may have a problem. One possible solution would be to use a different USB audio interface such as the Behringer UCA202. I cannot guarantee that this will solve the problem, as the fault is almost certainly with the USB audio, however, there seem to be far less problems with the UCA202 than with the ION. If there is any way that you can try one out before you buy then I would recommend that you do that.

Alternatively, if your ION turntable is still under guarantee it may be worth sending it back. It seems that some work, but some just don't.
