Audacity Forum

Simply can't use Audacity. I am recording from cassette, and can hear the casette playing, but Audacity produces short audio files of 4-5 seconds only wioth an "au" extension.. I end up with a complete track, but broken up into hundreds of files. Can't find any help on Audacity or computer sites. No one else seems to have the problem,- what stupid basic error have I made? Audacity records, andf I can play back for only 5-6 second files. I have XP and Audacity v 1.2.6.

Start Audacity recording and play the music. Stop Audacity after the music ends. Audacity timeline should fill up with blue waves representing the loudness of the performance.

File > Export as WAV > type in a name for the work. Upper and lower case letters, numbers, underscore and dash only. No other characters.

That exported sound file should contain your whole performance. You have to Export. Audacity does not save sound files.

Don't mess with the AU files or anything in the data folder. You could destroy your show like that.

do not look at those files or that folder
keep that folder in the same directory with the aup folder
use the aup folder
your whole track will be in that all put together nice and neat

The AUP file is the Project Manager and it uses the contents of the _DATA folder to construct your show, plus any other music clips you may have used. You can't move Audacity Projects once they're made because all the pieces depend on each other. Export to get a sound file and that can go anywhere and do whatever you want.
