Having problems creating an audio file of a large video file

My problem is that every time I import my video in audacity it freezes. It is a live DVD of a band that I like and I want to save one of the songs as an mp3 file but it keeps freezing. The video is around 80 minutes long and I really want that song. The file format is MPeg-4 Video File... Itunes. Is there any way for me to get the audio into audacity. Please Respond

Two ways to do it: The desperation method is capture a live playback in real time, so you'd be capturing the song for three minutes or however long it was. It's still digital, so the quality should be very good.

Which is it? MPEG2 from a Movie DVD, or an H.264 movie from iTunes? Audacity will not open either one. It doesn't manage video files. You'll need to convert the movie to a format that a ripper can deal with and tell the ripper to split or export a sound file in WAV format. You can use MP3 as well, but those cause sound damage.

Use a file format converter (such as the free "SUPER" by erightsoft) to convert from MPeg4 video to WAV (audio only).
You will then be able to import the WAV file into Audacity.
