I was recently reading up on audacity 1.3.12 b/c someone said it was better for windows 7. While doing this, i came across something that said audacity was going to release a "bug-free" 2.0 version. Should I wait to get the 2.0 or get the 1.3.12? When does the 2.0 come out? Thanks for answering if you can.

Bringing out 1.3.12 was so traumatic the developers decided to vacation in the Maldives for two or three years. Get that one.

When Audacity 2.0 comes out, it's scheduled to have a whole bunch of new and exciting bugs.

Once you get beyond simple programs, there is probably no such thing as "bug free". It's a bit like asking for a car that is 100% reliable. Of course some cars are extremely reliable, but never 100%. You would not expect 100% reliability for any model of car, but you would expect it to be reasonably reliable. So the question really is, "is Audacity 1.3.12 reasonably reliable?" The answer is that Audacity 1.3.12 is probably the most reliable version so far, but the developers are constantly wanting to make it better.

It is considerably better than the old 1.2.6 version and all of the forum regulars are using very recent 1.3.x versions on their "production machines". I'm not sure if anyone can predict when Audacity 2.0 will come out, but 1.3.12 is close enough to be a very usable tool. To be on the safe side, back up regularly, practice using it on short unimportant projects before you attempt anything big, and if you make an important recording, export a backup copy as a WAV file immediately after recording (these are sensible precautions for all audio software).

My advice - 1.3.12 - yes, go for it. :)
