Does Audacity have a panner?
I'm new to Audacity so I looked in the Effects list and didn't see a panner. By panner I mean an effect that will make the recorded sound go back and forth between the left and right speakers (stereo). Thanks if someone can point it out under another name if I just missed it.
Re: Does Audacity have a panner?
no
but it has tools so you could fake it
but why would you want to do something like that

Re: Does Audacity have a panner?
like you did for that guy who modulated one track with another one
use two sawtooth waves offset 1/2 cycle and apply one to each of the stereo tracks. the sound would go up and down in each track at opposite times making the sound appear to move back and forth.

Re: Does Audacity have a panner?
Ok, thanks Whomper. I wasn't sure if it was hidden in their somewhere in the effects list under another name.
Re: Does Audacity have a panner?
That sounds like you want the "LFO panning" effect (low frequency oscillating panning effect).nighthawk wrote:By panner I mean an effect that will make the recorded sound go back and forth between the left and right speakers (stereo).
There is a "Nyquist plug-in" that will do that - you can download it from this page of the main Audacity web site: http://audacityteam.org/download/nyquistplugins
It does a kind of "ping-pong" pan from one side to the other, to and fro.
See here for general information about plug-ins and how to install them: http://audacityteam.org/download/plugins

Thanks for that info Stevethefiddle.

You're welcome nighthawk. BTW, no need to repost the same question, though I do understand that you were given the impression that this feature was not available.
I've not actually tested that effect in Audacity 1.2, so if you have any problems with it give us a shout (send another post).

Why not? It's a cool and dramatic effect.whomper wrote:but why would you want to do something like that

Re: Does Audacity have a panner?
I'm having trouble getting any of the panner plug-ins to work. I did unzip them and put them in the Audacity plug-ins folder and they do show up in the list under Effects, but they don't seem to be working right, there is no right to left back and forth panning effect like as if I was manually moving the pan tab back and forth myself. I tried everything I can think of to get them to work to no effect. I downloaded them from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/nyquistplugins
Here's the plug-ins I tried: LfoPan, Panlfo2, and Panramp. None seem to change the audio at all. I can get other effects in Audacity to work ok, so it's not like I can't record some audio and then apply effects to it.
One thing that may be the causing the trouble is I'm running Audacity portable on a limited account on xp.
Also, I noticed there is a line in the Effects list column in Audacity and it seem as if any effects listed under this line don't seem to work properly, so maybe that's the problem, I'm not sure. The bottom effect is the WahWah and anything under that doesn't seem to work. It will just tell me "Nyquist did not return audio". I am thinking this may be the problem.

Re: Does Audacity have a panner?
Ok, I don't have this same problem when running on an admin account, the Lfo panner works good then. So I guess this must be related to running on a limited account. I suppose I can go back to doing recording on an admin account, even though I prefer to work out of a limited account. Hey, I'm happy though that it finally works!
Thanks again Stevethefiddle, and sorry about the double post.
