Audacity 1.2.6 and Exporting as FLAC

Hello,
I have a client who needs voice over audio as a FLAC file.
I have Windows XP and Audacity 1.2.6 which I’ve been using for years.
I went to edit, preferences, file format, Flac 16bit,OK.
I recorded and went to file, export selection as flac to my desktop, received the message: Can not export to.. .etc. An empty flac file was created.I used 'flac samples' as the name and no problems using the same name to export to desktop as wav or aiff. How can I export to FLAC? Do I need to upgrade to another version?

According to the "release notes" the export problem with Flac was fixed shortly before development on Audacity 1.2 was discontinued, but I've tried it on Windows XP and I get the same error.
Flac export works fine in the current 1.3.12 version.

Hi Steve,
I'm so accustomed to the version I have now-is the learning curve fairly easy and would you suggest I try the version of which you speak? I assume I can always go back to the old after I've completed the FLAC project. Audacity is such a great recording package.Thanks for your help.Regards,Ed

There are a few differences but it's certainly no more "difficult", in fact many tasks can be done much more simply.
There's a few differences in the layout, such as "Import" and "Export" are now both in the File menu, and changing the export file type is now selected in the Export dialogue rather than buried in Preferences, but there's a lot of documentation to help you "settle in". At the top of this page you will see links to "Tips" "Tutorials" and "Documentation". To help you get up to speed on the new version you could try going through a couple of the tutorials, or just play with it for a bit.

There's also "Help" included in the program.

If you just want to give it a test drive, there's no need to uninstall the old version. 1.3.12 will install in a different folder and will happily sit next to your old version. There's just a couple of restrictions - The old version can't open projects that have been saved by the new version, and you can't run both of them simultaneously.

Hello,
We are running Windows XP.
I have 140 LPs. I want to convert these to FLAC format as we now have a Sonos system and all our cd's have been converted to flac stored on a Lacie. Used Ripstation Micro for that. Works well.
So far I have been using Audacity 1.2.6. I may have made the error of using 32 bit. Methodology is to put all the Lps through Audacity then, define tracks, remove scratches and export as multiple.
I had a 45 rpm disc which I used audacity in stereo 32 bit and successfully exported multiple in mp3 format. Can't export it as flac using the same process.

So what do I do? Go back and rerecord in 24bit?
Or, download version 1.3.12 and use that instead?

Use the 1.3.12 version instead, but don't just convert the MP3 version. If you still have the Audacity Project (AUP and _data folder) you should be able to open it in Audacity 1.3.12. (see my previous post in this thread about having both versions of Audacity installed).

When you Export (from "File" menu), select FLAC as the file type, then click on the "Options" button and set the required bit depth and compression level.

Hi Steve-Things seem to going OK with 1 2 6 but I'm having a heck of a time getting accustomed to the new silence generator.I like the older one better-maybe because i'm just used to it. if I wanted to insert .8 seconds of silence between a number of different voices on 1 track-maybe I'm just mathematically challenged but I thought I could just enter 00 h00 m s+08 but it turns out that.8 seconds translates as 00 h00 m s+35000 ? I know I'm doing something that's really easy and turning it into Einstein's theory of relativity. aI just don't understand how .8 seconds equals s+35000. Any suggestions? Ed

all you need to do is to select a format that suits you from the drop-down in the Silece Generator dialog box

Just click on the little downward pointing black triangle in the dialog box and pick one from the drop-down list.

The problem is thatAudacity does not appear to "remember" this setting and the next time you use it it seems to change the display format to H ours Mins Secs and Samples - so you will need to reset it every time.

I suspect that this may be a bug. I will bring it to the attention of the person who tracks bugs for Audacity.

Hi WC,
I tried that but it's still confusing for me.The other Audacity silence generator was a breeze:highlight a section,clear the current time and type in .08...done. This one to get.08 seconds,I have to clear it all and type in 35000? Doesn't make sense to me.I still think I'm doing something wrong.I'll keep pluggin' away though. Ed : )
