I want to record audio from Youtube. But whenever I open Audacity I can't hear anything from Youtube even after I've closed audacity. Can anyone help with this?

Do you use Skype? Skype can mess up sound pathways whether or not Audacity is there.

Or do you use a USB audio device, such as a USB turntable?

The answer to both of those questions is no.

Well that's the two quick 'n' easy possibilities out of the way, now we'll have to start digging.
You need to start this off - what sort of computer, what operating system, which exact version of Audacity, what sort of headphones/speakers....
Don't spare the detail, too often it takes half a dozen posts before some key bit of information comes out - a thorough description at the start can save a great deal of time (too much information is better than not enough).

Intel Premium 4
Windows XP SP3
Audacity 1.3
Altec Speakers as shown in this image:

MP3 files stored on my computer work fine. But I can't hear anything stored on the internet.

OK, I've got my Intel Premium 4 and Windows XP SP3
Not sure exactly which version of Audacity to go for I'll try 1.3.12
Altec Speakers - ok, I plug these into my laptop? with a little round mini-jack plug?
Am I right so far?
What do I need to do to make it go wrong?
Open my web browser, start playing something on YouTube, then open Audacity and the YouTube video freezes? Is that what's happening?

Sorry I couldn't find this thread, but now I've bookmarked it. No, Youtube doesn't freeze. If there's a video, I can see it find. I just can't hear anything from it and audacity just records the same blankness that I hear.

Oh, Audacity is not recording the YouTube sound.

The Audacity red recording meters should be bouncing during the recording. No meters, no recording.
